Madder Root Shirt – Naturally Dyed with Madder & Indigo

A fusion of old-world craftsmanship and contemporary style, the Madder Root Shirt is made using the ancient Ajrakh printing method, a multi-stage technique that requires the alchemic knowledge of natural dyeing, passed down through generations. Crafted on a base of organic Fairtrade cotton, this breathable, lightweight shirt carries the depth of tradition, with the essence of Ajrakh printed into every fibre.

Each piece is printed using three precisely interlocking wooden blocks, ensuring a carefully aligned and intricate pattern. The deep red hue comes from madder root known for its warm, earthy vibrance, while indigo adds contrast. The fabric undergoes a slow, natural process of washing, boiling, and sun-drying to set the colours organically. The result is a beautifully detailed textile that embodies true Ajrakh craftsmanship. Finished with handmade coconut buttons, a straight-cut hem, and an offset top button for a relaxed yet refined finish, complementing its naturally grounded aesthetic.

From seed to shirt, every step of our production is intentional. The cotton is grown without GMOs or harmful agrochemicals, then hand printed, naturally dyed, washed in flowing water, and dried in the sun by a tenth generation master Ajrakh printer and his team of artisans in Kutch. The result is a shirt that’s effortlessly wearable, naturally breathable, and rich with history.

True natural dyes and hand block printing mean no two pieces are exactly alike. Subtle variations in colour and pattern are part of the process—a mark of authenticity, not a flaw. Each shirt is unique, carrying the soul of its makers and the rhythm of tradition.
